Film Noir | Generic Conventions

We looked at a screening of "This gun is for Hire" from 1947. There are a few generic conventions that are found in Film Noir film's. These are:
  • A old font such as that of old newspapers. These fonts are usually presented with a dock shadow which is a low opacity shadow.
  • The types of clothing the men wore were that generically associated with the mafia, long trenchcoats, hats, suits. A gun was shown within the first 3 minutes of the film.
  • The screening showed a deal going down where he pulled out a gun instead of the money and shot him.
  • Murder can be seen as a generic convention of Film Noir.
  • Type of music for Film Noir is classic, piano music that sets a theme of that kind of time period.
  • Film Noir is a black and white film that is typical of a murder or crime.
